Chapter 2: Developing a Connected Learning Model
Chapter 2 speaks about how learning
communities can influence educational and professional relationships. Being
able to collaborate with other individuals who share the same interests or profession
with you, is extremely important. The text speaks about how using a three-pronged
approach to professional development. They are local community, global network,
and bounded community. “professional learning communities take a team focus
personal learning networks take an individual focus, and communities of practice
take a systemic focus” (Nusssbum-Beach, p 28). The chapter speaks about how
being able to work in these different types of communities enhances the
individuals personal and professional self and is a way to share thoughts and
ideas for one to use within the professional world.
These learning communities are an
amazing asset to the health care field, especially to Physician Assistants. The
career as a Physician Assistant is still fairly new, and some individuals do
not know what they are. To have networks to not only enhance education, but
learn a plethora of information from other healthcare providers is an asset to
the field. These communities can be used to trade information on upcoming
scientific developments, or for healthcare providers to trade ideas on how to
treat specific patients and diseases. The use of networking and learning communities
is extremely important within the healthcare field. While there may be language
barriers and cultural differences all over the world, healthcare providers are
still treating the same illness’, no matter what country they are in. It is
helpful to see how other providers care for and handle certain patients and diseases
all over the world.

I agree with your opinion on how being connected online is viewed as an asset for your health career. Online communities are more open to different ideas and concepts than a community learning network. For the past few years, anything can be found online, from how to get accepted into colleges, to how to find the perfect job. Online communities are more open-minded in the sense that anything can be talked about, for instance, it's easier to talk about sensitive topics behind a screen than to do it in person while people may judge, and say anything that comes to mind first without thinking of consequences. Meanwhile, in online communities people may think twice of their respond and may look at your opinion from different perspectives.
ReplyDeleteIt is undeniably advantageous to be able to work in the three-pronged approach to professional development. I feel like you get the most out of the learning community, especially since you are communicating with amateurs and professionals in three different areas. I like that you made the connection of not only being able to grow personally, but also professionally. I do agree with you on the statement that “learning communities are an amazing asset to the healthcare field” because I am planning on going into that field as well.
ReplyDeleteHi! I believe you are right about how networking is great for physician assistants! I can only say I did not know what a physician assistant was until my sophomore year of college. You do not hear a lot people pursuing a career in this profession, and I think it would be great if physician assistants around the world network because it can spread the word about the profession and it can help expand the network!
