Chapter 5
Chapter 5 spoke about many ways to
save important information online. Websites such as Diigo and Delicious are
used to bookmark and tag specific websites. This chapter also speaks about how
important blogs are when working to communicate with other people. There are
many different types of blogs, and many different websites geared toward
certain professions. Blogs rely on participation from the outside world and work
well due to communication between many different individuals. “Blogs are a
participatory medium where users welcome feedback and discussions. Many blogs
allow comments at the bottom of the post” (Nussbaum-Beach p 43).
In the healthcare field I believe
RSS readers are extremely important. It is extremely important for healthcare
providers to be able to communicate and network with people all around the
world and be apart of networking opportunities. Blogs truly help with the
spread of information. Ideas, questions, and comments about anything healthcare
related can be bounced back and forth between the sites. Individual’s in the
healthcare field are extremely busy and do not have the time to constantly be
checking blogs for new content and comments. RSS readers will truly be beneficial
to these providers because they will be informed when new content is posted,
and they do not have to continuously keep checking, since they do not have the
time for it. I personally really like the idea of RSS readers and will start
using them for myself for certain networking sites I am apart of.

Megan, I agree that RSS readers are a beneficial tool for many people, especially people working in very busy professions such as healthcare. I am going into occupational therapy and see blogs as a way to view others' personal experiences and knowledge in order to expand my own thoughts and potentially gain some inspiration if I ever feel like I need a new idea on how to help a patient. What field are you looking to go into and are there any sites that you have found more helpful than others?
ReplyDeleteHey Megan! There are tons of tools that we can use in our future occupations to help us acheive our goals. RSS blogs and readers are important tools that we can utilize in all professions, but especially in one like yours. Since I am going into the finance sector, I'd like to learn even more and try to utilize these different types of RSS tools. Gaining different insights and experiences through these could help me progress through my career. Are there any RSS networks that you would suggest looking into?
ReplyDeleteI have never understood how RSS readers worked, after reading the chapter and your post I am more confident in using them to monitor any new information or events that could be occurring in the marine science field without having to constantly check various websites for different information. Before reading this chapter were you already familiar with how RSS readers worked?
