Chapter 4

Chapter 4 speaks about how individuals actions online matter and how you must build a trusting relationship with each person online. Building these relationships help individuals make connections with everyone who is involved and could potentially help everyone in the long run. Being conscientious of one’s online reputation will help them in their professional and personal life. Future employers look at all social media platforms and you want to look your best in hopes that you get hired. Also, looking professional and watching what you post helps your social media pages attract more attention from professionals and other individuals.

I found this chapter, especially helpful for my future career as a Physician Assistant. What I found most important to my future career was the section regarding one’s online reputation. Social media is very common among individuals and many do not think before they post, which can hurt them in the long run. While your social media pages at this time may be for your friends and family, one should always consider the idea of a future employer seeing it. Having pictures of things such as alcohol and drugs can give off the wrong impression and hurt your chances of receiving a job.

In the past, I worked for a company where my sole job was to find potential employees on all social media platforms and report back to my boss what I found. Along with other reasons, people social media accounts like Instagram and Facebook were reasons why they were not hired. Ever since I was younger I have heard people say to watch what I post, but I never actually believed it was true, until I started working for that company and checked social media profiles constantly.

  1. First off, the images caught my attention right away because they fit so well with the chapter. The topic of social media and the history of one's posts are crucial in the future decisions. From your example of your employment enlightened me to how serious it is to have a clean online history.

  2. Online reputation is extremely important now-a-days. Employers can see from what you enjoy doing to what you do on a daily basis. Employers take social media very serious because they are able to notice how much of a reserved person one is. However, I don't think an employer should or should not hire someone based on social media accounts.

  3. I like how your images show the affect your reputation has on your career. Great images! People seem to fail to realize that the way they portray themselves on social media influences the amount of trust that people can have in them as a professional. Often times before potential customers use a person's service they tend to do a google search, and judging by what they find, they decide to whether or not to use a service.

  4. The images caught my attention the most. I really like how you mentioned the importance of having a clean social media because what you post can effect you getting a job somewhere. It is very important to watch what you post because anybody can see your page and judge you from it.

  5. Hi Megan! You discussed a really important thing that I think a lot of young people neglect or don't deem important, which is social media presence. With an increasingly globalized and online world, practically anything can be found online, no matter how "private" you think your account may be. Aside from maintaining a professional online presence, what ways do you think you could establish trust online, keeping in mind your goal of becoming a PA?

Very relateable and understandable pictures, by the way!

  6. I liked how you talked about reputation. In my blog I didn't mention it, but the way you wrote about it really brought out the importance in it. I never really believed that people actually checked potential employee's social media accounts until you mentioned that it was your job. As someone like me who is going for Forensic Psychology and even for you as a Physicians Assistant, it is important that we watch our posts so we don't jeopardize future career opportunities.
